About Glenwood Chess Club
The Glenwood Chess Club is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide the South Suburban community with quality chess competition and instruction. Our club is affiliated with the Illinois/Indiana Chess Association (ICA)/ISCA and The US Chess Federation (USCF).
A. To provide instruction, entertainment, and social life in chess for its members. B. To promote the popularity of chess. C. To teach its members to play chess. D. To conduct tournaments, matches, and other forms of chess competition.
Glenwood Chess Club has partnered with Chess Magnet School. All new student members will receive a complimentary one month trial membership to the Chess Magnet School’s program. The Chess Magnet School is a web based program that teaches and challenge’s students from beginner to expert.
Student Chess Program
Tuesdays from 7:30pm to 8:30pm is student instruction time. Activities will include lectures on master games, chess openings, tactics and end-games.
Thursdays will be dedicated to open play for students where they are free to play other members or join in on competitive activities.
We are asking all members to donate $5.00 monthly to maintain our club snack program. We wish to provide hot dogs, chips, water, fruits and cookies nightly.
Glenwood Chess Club hosts at least two USCF rated tournaments each month with one free tournament for club members.
The Glenwood Chess Club is a 501(C3) non-profit charity. The Glenwood Chess Club was started by Ken Windmon, a community volunteer and chess enthusiast/organizer who enjoys teaching and mentoring kids. He is the Club President. Vice-President Herbert Ferguson is a teacher at James Hart School in Homewood, Illinois and has coached the chess team for over 22 years. Dr. Orlan Smith is the club secretary and event organizer. He is the creator of the Chess Wars events.
